there we saw a wide wide river with endless, dusky sky. seagulls flew and filled narrow strips. we walked on, jumped up, ran a bit, held on tight. grey overhead with charcoal floating by. jumping from paving stone on to deeper joys, skipping rocks, or sinking them, slowly into silt. cool but not cold, so fresh in a cloudy sphere. people and pets go by on string, all of them but not us. and then, up, up high, trees that are full, of hundreds, maybe thousands, of little, tiny birds. fly over and back, sitting, singing, filling the sky with a speckled moving joy of endless, rounding love, and back around again. we stand with our heads tilted, hands aflutter, hearts alive. thoroughly taken, smiling, free. leaning in, and breathing out. holding on and letting go. grabbing tight, so as not to lose, the glorious day we have.
